Heavy melting scrap
Heavy Melting Steel (HMS) scrap
This type of scrap indicates a mixture of two grades of scrap metal:
HMS 1 (80%): This grade consists of heavier, thicker steel scrap with a minimum thickness of 1/4 inch (6.35 mm). It typically includes items like beams, plates, and other structural components that are free from major contamination and non-ferrous metals.
HMS 2 (20%): This grade includes lighter steel scrap with a minimum thickness of 1/8 inch (3.175 mm). It encompasses items like smaller steel pieces, pipes, and plates that are also free from significant impurities and non-ferrous materials.
The 80:20 ratio indicates that the mixture contains 80% HMS 1 and 20% HMS 2, combining the sturdier, thicker pieces of HMS 1 with the lighter, thinner pieces of HMS 2. This mixture is often used in steelmaking processes where a balance between the robust qualities of HMS 1 and the more manageable size of HMS 2 is desired. Our HMS grades meet the standards set by ISRI 200-206.
